Brief

The BBG Academy is a fully inclusive secondary school offering places to boys and girls aged 11 to 16 years of age.

The school itself has had extensive refurbishment works undertaken over the past 5 years resulting in older sections of the school with added on new built structures.

As the school had sections of old and new build areas, BBG Academy turned to us to get a specialist view of how to manage the asbestos within their building, especially when considering past refurbishment work which had been undertaken. Naturally, the safety of their staff and pupils is paramount and the school wanted to build up a clear picture of its responsibilities.

Approach

Sensitive to the needs of the school, we carried out all of our work outside of normal hours to avoid causing any undue attention or alarm and to prevent any disruption to teaching. Though all the required sampling work was completed outside of school hours, we also provided extra peace of mind with air quality tests to prove classrooms were safe to be used afterwards.

Our approved builders immediately repaired any minor damage caused to the building during our survey, so by the time the morning bell rang for class nobody would have known we’d ever been there!

Result

Various surveys and a detailed management plan were provided to help the school plan for the future and keep on track with its asbestos responsibilities. Any items discovered that needed removing or encapsulating were dealt with safely and swiftly.

We’ll now be on hand to provide expert advice whenever refurbishment works are planned to ensure asbestos risks are properly considered.
