Industry bodies launch asbestos skills certification

Asbestos professionals in the UK have joined forces to launch a certification card so that workers can prove they are qualified to handle the material.

The initiative brings together for the first time organisations representing consultancies, licensed contractors and asbestos professionals to tighten up safety procedures.

The card will carry the logo of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) to show the holder has received the correct level of training.

The UK construction industry has various card schemes providing proof of training. However, at the start of 2015 the Construction Leadership Council announced the industry should accept only schemes carrying the CSCS logo. The move, known as the “One Industry Logo”, was in response to the publication of the government’s industrial strategy, Construction 2025.

There are two types of card available: “skilled worker – asbestos analyst” and “skilled worker – asbestos surveyor”. Both are renewable after five years and are also available as virtual cards for a smartphone.
