An inquest has opened into the death of a 51-year-old labourer from an asbestos-related illness.

Ian Gisburn of Shiphay Lane in Torquay died of abdominal mesothelioma on November 4.

The coroner in Torquay has been told that during the course of his working life it was believed Mr Gisburn was exposed to asbestos.

In 2012 it was found he was suffering with peritoneal mesothelioma.

Mr Gisburn, who was divorced, was admitted to Rowcroft Hospice for symptom control but died later that same evening.
